BREXIT or not, we love travelling around Europe so inevitably, when offered the chance to visit Portugal for the launch of the Audi A5 and S5 models we simply asked “when?”. Of course, Germans are known for efficiency but Audi certainly know how to do things the classy way also. Chauffeured from London to Gatwick in an A8 we arrived to news of a delayed flight, consoling ourselves in the British Airways Club lounge. Having left a wet West Sussex, we arrived in a warm and sunny Porto, a city in celebration mode for the Festa de São João do Porto; a festival that saw the whole city on the streets in joyous mood to pay tribute to Saint John the Baptist. We found ourselves well placed, our hotel overlooking the serene River Douro. And how was the car you may ask? A short trip the following day back to Porto airport saw us collect the A5 Quattro and embark on a day of driving through the bendy Portuguese mountain passes and pebbled streets to really test the car out. Impressively, whether it was the long winding roads with intense acceleration followed by sharp braking, the car handled smoothly, well balanced at all times. The quick-fire acceleration added some fun to the drive, a gentle foot on the gas moving from 0-60mph in a matter of seconds. As with the latest A4, Audi have provided great emphasis on connectivity – the Head Up Display (HUD) or as it’s also known, the Virtual cockpit, making speed, Sat Nav and essential vehicle information visible on the driver’s windscreen. Meanwhile, Apple CarPlay functionality allows an iPhone to sync seamlessly with the car to play music, send messages and make and receive phone calls. The car comes equipped with a complimentary three month subscription to Audi-Connect, a SIM card that allows the car uncapped data for internet connectivity. From Audi, we’ve come to expect refined aesthetics and the A5 doesn’t disappoint. Whilst the exterior retains the muscular hallmarks of Audi, it looks sleek, helped by wonderfully smooth curves. As ever, the interior is graceful and refined, equipped with a Bang & Olufsen speaker system trumped only by the fantastic three function massage seats available on both driver and passenger side. We enjoyed the A5 Quattro so much that we didn’t leave enough time test out the S5 although we did manage a quick peek – check out our vlog for more. Back to the A5 Quattro, we had a fantastic two days of driving in Portugal with only positives to write home about. This is another great upgrade within the Audi family, a car you can feel at home in while getting sports performance on the road. For specifications and further information visit Audi.
