Johnnie & Ginger Rural Gent 2 July, 2014 Spiced Rum and ginger is the gentry drink of choice so we were excited to hear about the worlds best selling whisky, Johnnie Walker Red Label’s latest serve, bringing ginger to Scotch Whisky. The match is daring but makes perfect sense. Take the deep and complex palate of Red Label and combine it with the fresh and firey notes of ginger and you have a serve perfect for those long summer evenings. But don’t take our word for it, industry leading food adventurer Sam Bompas, of Bompas & Parr says, “The way ginger and whisky interact on the palate means it’s more than just a taste, it’s a sensation: you get that ‘burn’, heat, the chill of refreshment, and to that extent a Johnnie & Ginger is more than a drink, it’s an experience.” So what are you waiting for, pick up a bottle of ginger ale / beer and give the mix a go or for the more adventurous why not try the amazing recipe below. Send us your Red Label experiments using #streetgentry Ginger Mixer Recipe Equipment: a jar, grater, measuring jug, spoon, bowl, cheese cloth Ingredients: sugar, ginger (your preference of type), water Grate 30g of ginger. Make sure you retain all the juice Squeeze the juice out of the pulp into a jar through a cheese cloth, or just with your hands Rinse the ginger pulp with a splash of water and squeeze again to extract more juice Optionally, add some of the pulp into the ginger juice Pour 30g of sugar into the juice in the jar, then, shake until dissolved (you’ll be surprised how much will dissolve — you don’t have to use all of it) Add any flavour you feel boldly compliments the ginger to taste – fiery, light, spicy, fresh or sweet! Sieve and pour – your mixer is ready!
