Equally at ease in a well tailored suit as in leather and denim, part of McQueen’s appeal was his ability to look effortlessly cool in both refined and rugged outfits. The key was that McQueen knew what suited him and wore it well. Whether it was Persol shades with a polo and chinos or a v-neck sweater with a button-down shirt, McQueen excelled at wearing the simple things well with minimal effort – arguably the defining hallmark of a style icon.

McQueen made the Harrington jacket in particular an essential for every man’s wardrobe virtually single handedly, with Hollywood stars such as Daniel Craig, Ryan Gosling and Jason Statham following in his Baracuta wearing wake. McQueen achieved his much emulated look of effortless cool by pairing his jacket with simple low key pieces such as white tees, wool knits and beige chinos, proving that the key to cool is more often than not in minimal, versatile styling.[/column]
